Ex-Proof Electrical Installation for Hazardous Areas

Electrical installation and safe equipment setup in explosive and hazardous atmospheres, in full compliance with standards.

Electrical installation in explosive atmospheres is a different discipline from ordinary work. The aim here is not merely to carry power but to guarantee that no igniting spark or surface temperature can arise under any condition. In areas containing dust, gas or vapour, a mistake means an accident rather than a fault. Contech builds installations in facilities with Ex-proof areas to match the zone classification.

Work begins by clarifying the zone classification. Zones are defined by how often and for how long an explosive atmosphere is present, with separate classification for gas and dust. That classification is the plant’s responsibility, but it is reviewed jointly at the design stage, because the protection type of every piece of equipment selected depends directly on it. Protection method governs equipment selection. Flameproof enclosure, increased safety, intrinsically safe circuits and pressurisation suit different zones and different equipment types. Intrinsically safe circuits require separate work on barrier selection and circuit parameter calculation; the energy limits the barrier permits are verified together with the field device parameters. Temperature class matters at least as much as protection type. The surface temperature of equipment must stay below the ignition temperature of the substance present. During assembly, cable entry components are critical. Ex-proof glands are selected in the correct type and tightened as the manufacturer specifies; using the wrong gland removes the protective property of the enclosure entirely. Unused entries are closed with certified stopping plugs. Cable types are chosen against mechanical protection needs and ambient conditions. Earthing and equipotential bonding demand particular care, because a potential difference is a source of sparks in an explosive atmosphere. When assembly is complete, the list of certified equipment, certificate numbers and installation details are documented and handed to the plant. That file is the plant’s evidence in subsequent inspections and maintenance work.

Key Capabilities
  • Zone classification reviewed jointly at design stage (gas and dust separately).
  • Equipment selected by protection type: flameproof, increased safety, intrinsically safe.
  • Barrier selection and circuit parameter verification on intrinsically safe circuits.
  • Temperature class set against the ignition temperature of the substance present.
  • Correct-type Ex-proof glands; certified stopping plugs on unused entries.
  • Equipotential bonding and earthing applied meticulously against spark risk.
  • Certificate numbers and installation details documented and handed to the plant.
Where It Is Applied
  • Gas and vapour zones in chemical and paint facilities
  • Dust explosion zones in plants processing flour, sugar and granules
  • Electrical installation in fuel and solvent storage areas
  • Compliance checks on existing Ex-proof installations before inspection

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you carry out the zone classification?

Zone classification is the plant’s responsibility and is normally prepared alongside process knowledge. We review that classification jointly at the design stage and select equipment against it. Where no classification exists, we point you to the right route for producing one.

Can we use ordinary equipment in an Ex area?

No. Every piece of equipment used in an Ex area must hold certification appropriate to the zone and the substance present. Using uncertified equipment is unacceptable on both safety and legal compliance grounds.

Will you check the compliance of our existing installation?

Yes. Equipment certificates, protection types, temperature classes, gland practice and earthing are examined, and non-conformities are reported in priority order.
